Celebrating the Holiday

Today is Labor Day in Belize. To honor the Belizean holiday, we dedicated the day to discovering the beauty of this country. We were picked up on a boat and taken to a “caye” 45 minutes out in the ocean. After arriving to a tiny, private island, we snorkeled. We had the opportunity to see sting rays, sea turtles, barracudas, sharks, and other exotic sea life. We enjoyed fresh BBQ chicken, potatoes, and salad for lunch while on the island.

Keri Vogt:
Today we had a chance to experience life in paradise!  We took a boat out to a key and snorkeled with coral, fish, sea turtles, sting rays, and even swam with sharks! It was a blast and definitely an experience I’ll never forget. Afterwards we enjoyed a delicious picnic on the beach and then took a boat to Hatchet Caye Resort and wandered around for a while. Overall, this Belizean Labor Day was beautiful, serene, and perfect. It only makes me more excited to see what else lies ahead on this wonderful trip.

Nolan Johnson:
Today was an amazing mix of events in Belize. Our entire day was focused on some needed rest and relaxation as we traveled to the epitome of paradise. Literally, if you took the normal beach scene from a computer background screen saver, I could say, “I’ve be been there.” A tiny sand island in the middle of a crystal clear ocean with palm trees, white sand, and marine life abound was our destination. To put it simply, it was an amazing taste of Belize.

Here are some interesting events that really accented our adventures today, with a special shout out to the brave “party boaters” who braved/endured the hour long boat ride on the smallest and oldest of boats with me. Wooden benches and sore bodies were the results of the ridiculously long and rough boat ride. Second, running out of gas twice in the middle of the ocean added to the adventure. Finally, attempting to sail with said empty-gas-boat the final four miles to shore capped off our crazy day. Can’t wait to see what the other days bring!
